Vanessa Skelton Sports Massage & Soft Tissue Therapy
I'm a BTEC Level 5 (equivalent to degree level) therapist offering sports and remedial massage and soft tissue therapy for the treatment of chronic pain and soft tissue injuries. I also offer oncology massage for those living with cancer; and pregnancy and post-natal massages. I'm based in Musselburgh, East Lothian and Portobello.

I use a range of traditional massage and soft tissue techniques such as trigger points, soft tissue release, assisted stretching, myofascial dry cupping, IASTM and gentle mobilisations to effect a change in the tissue to release tension, increase mobility and reduce pain.
Services
I've always been fascinated by the human body and love to find solutions to problems.
This led me to studying for a degree in Biomaterials Science and Tissue Engineering and in the early part of my career I worked for a company that provided skin cell therapy to burns victims.
However I wanted a more hands on approach to dealing with dysfunction and pain and retrained, studying for a BTEC Level 5 Diploma in Clinical Sports and Remedial Massage with the Oxford School of Sports Massage.
I hated sport at school but discovered Ultimate Frisbee at university and have been playing ever since, gradually improving and eventually representing GB at the World Championships of Beach Ultimate in Dubai 2015.
The body experiences massive change (physical, hormonal, emotional) throughout pregnancy and following birth.
As your posture changes through pregnancy, your muscles and surrounding soft tissues can overwork and shorten or become stretched, causing pain and discomfort.
Soft tissue therapy is a great way of identifying the causes of pain and discomfort and treating them effectively so that you can feel more comfortable in your own body.
It also allows you all important rest and relaxation time and aids restful sleep.
People with cancer can benefit from massage at every stage of the disease, from diagnosis, through their treatment and in the time after their treatment has ended.
It is important to find an appropriately trained therapist that will understand the demands that the disease itself and the treatments put on the body and can modify their touch, techniques, positioning and length of session to be appropriate for each individual client.
For those actively undergoing treatment, it is important that the body isn't placed under extra stress so the pressure and application of techniques will match what they can cope with.
Seated chair massage is an adaptation of massage whereby the recipient is placed in a specialised chair that is designed to support the body and put the patient into a position that helps to release tension and relax muscles.
The massage is performed through clothing, without oils and lotions and takes around 10-20 minutes.
Techniques from deep tissue, Swedish and Shiatsu massages are used and typically focus on the muscle groups in the neck, shoulders, back and arms.
Although commonly used in corporate settings, this modality can also be really useful for people with limited mobility who struggle to get on and off a conventional massage table or for those who struggle to lie down.
This is the standard treatment.
Includes initial consultation (on first visit), any necessary postural/joint assessments, a full treatment and advice on remedial exercise where applicable.
Perfect for people with chronic pain, soft tissue injuries or for general maintenance massages.
If you would like sports massage services for your sports club or would like to have me come and work at your event, please contact me for further information.
Any strapping and taping used in the course of a normal treatment won't incur any charges.
